Annual event highlighting the art and science of mixology funds educational programming
SAN FRANCISCO (January 8, 2020)—The Exploratorium’s tenth annual Science of Cocktails fundraiser will take place on Friday, February 7, 2020. The event features science-inspired cocktails, delicious bites, and boozy experiments and demonstrations. The event will also feature live music from Bay Area favorite, Tumbledown House, and access to the museum's 650+ hands-on exhibits. This year’s event is presented in part by United Airlines, and support of the event helps the Exploratorium create joyful, inquiry-based educational experiences that empower people to understand the world around them.
“Our Science of Cocktails fundraiser is always a fantastic celebration, and a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our educational programs,” said Blair Winn, senior director of Institutional Advancement at the Exploratorium. “We are thrilled to welcome guests to the 10th annual event, and raise a glass to such a lively expression of science.”
“United has proudly served San Francisco for more than 90 years, and we are delighted to support the Exploratorium and innovative programs that continue to educate, inspire and keep the Bay Area thriving,” said Janet Lamkin, the airline’s president of California.

Science of Cocktails, the museum’s most spirited fundraising event, will include more than 20 open bars from Bay Area establishments, including Blackened, El Tesoro, J. Rieger & Co., and Sipsmith. Be Your Own Bartender’s Carey Jones and John McCarthy will teach party-goers how to craft their ideal beverage by following the authors’ interactive flowchart. Exploratorium staff educators will demonstrate to partygoers how to use simple cocktail ingredients to extract, examine, and sip genetic material from the strawberries in their daiquiris, when to shake or stir their cocktails, and find out just how much alcohol a gummy bear can absorb. Science of Cocktails favorite, Tumbledown House, will return to perform parlor jazz.
Multiple ticket packages are available online, including the inclusion of either an individual or dual After Dark membership—named “the sexiest museum membership ever” by 7x7—which gives full access to 50+ boundary-pushing, adult-only Thursday night programs. Science of Cocktails tickets and packages are available while supplies last, and have sold out annually.
