What does a solar eclipse sound like? During a solar eclipse in 2016, an Exploratorium production crew traveled to the island of Woleai, in Micronesia, and trained multiple telescopes on the sun. As the eclipse progressed, a laptop running custom software collected the telescopes' data on the movement of the moon and the brightness of the sun. Composer Wayne Grim used this software to create this live composition based on the data. Grim's musical composition uses the rotational and orbital periods of the Earth, moon, and sun as formal elements. Enjoy this excerpt from the three-hour piece.
