Chromium roared into view in the 1920s, giving a modern, mirror-bright shine to Art Deco and, later, to automotive and interior designs. A brittle transition metal, chromium is alloyed with steel to produce stainless steel and plated onto metallic and other surfaces for a protective, corrosion-resistant gleam.
