In this intimate talk from 1990, cross-cultural composer and musician Jin Hi Kim reflects on her diverse experiences in Eastern and Western musical worlds. Her story starts with learning to play the traditional Korean komungo, a six-stringed, fretted board zither, in her youth (it was played almost exclusively by men at that time). She came to the United States “hungry to learn” the music of other countries and became a renowned contemporary composer and musician. This talk touches on the rich personal, cultural, and technical aspects of her musical accomplishments. She shares many examples of her work, including a piece in which she plays the first-ever electric komungo.
