[00:00:39.07] My name is Viv, and this is the math episode. [00:00:44.02] We're going to be reading this book, [00:00:45.07] "The Cookie Fiasco" by Dan Santat [00:00:49.05] and then we're going to be doing an activity [00:00:52.03] where we turn a greeting card into a little gift box [00:00:58.04] that has a top and a bottom to it. [00:01:02.00] So let's get reading. [00:01:03.06] (upbeat music) [00:01:05.09] "The Cookie Fiasco." [00:01:08.06] This is a very exciting book about four very hungry friends, [00:01:13.07] but only three cookies. [00:01:17.04] And it's by Dan Santat. [00:01:20.09] But this is an elephant and piggy book, [00:01:23.09] elephant and piggy do the introduction [00:01:26.03] and elephant and piggy are created by Mo Willem. [00:01:31.07] And Moe writes a little introduction to you, the reader. [00:01:35.04] Dear reader, it is so cool that you like to read. [00:01:40.08] Elephant and piggy like to read too, [00:01:43.05] so I thought I would share [00:01:45.01] some of their favorite books with you. [00:01:47.05] The Cookie Fiasco is about four friends [00:01:51.08] with three cookies and one big problem. [00:01:57.00] I hope you enjoy this story [00:01:58.06] as much as elephant and piggy do, your pal Mo. [00:02:04.09] I want to read this funny book. [00:02:07.04] Me too! [00:02:09.02] But how can the two of us read this one book? [00:02:15.07] We can read it together. [00:02:19.08] That is one great idea. [00:02:28.06] Hey guys, cookie time! [00:02:32.08] Uh oh. [00:02:34.07] Hold on, there are three cookies, but four of us. [00:02:42.03] Someone will not get a cookie. [00:02:49.02] That is not fair. [00:02:51.07] We need equal cookies for all. [00:02:56.04] I have an idea. [00:02:59.01] Maybe you two can share one cookie. [00:03:04.00] What? [00:03:05.04] We do not share cookies. [00:03:07.02] We do not share a lot of things. [00:03:10.06] Well, I am wearing her socks. [00:03:14.07] I heard crocodiles do not like cookies. [00:03:20.00] Maybe you should not get a cookie. [00:03:23.06] Huh? [00:03:24.08] I eat cookies. [00:03:25.09] I love cookies. [00:03:27.04] I could eat a whole plate right now. [00:03:32.01] Or we can share by our size. [00:03:37.00] That's a great idea. [00:03:39.09] Wait, you're huge. [00:03:42.09] You would get all the cookies. [00:03:46.05] Oh, really? [00:03:48.09] (laughter) [00:03:52.08] Gasp. [00:03:54.03] Do you hear something? [00:03:56.04] Oh, and it looks like purple hippo [00:04:02.00] is snapping all the cookies into pieces. [00:04:06.03] Hippo, what are you doing? [00:04:09.05] Gah, I break things when I am nervous. [00:04:14.08] Sorry. [00:04:16.06] Stop that. [00:04:18.01] Show us the cookies. [00:04:21.04] You are making things worse. [00:04:24.07] One, two, three, four, five, six. [00:04:32.09] Now there are six cookie pieces, but only four of us. [00:04:39.09] This is not good. [00:04:43.01] This is not fair. [00:04:45.04] This is not equal. [00:04:48.09] My nerves. [00:04:51.07] We have to solve this problem fast. [00:04:55.04] Our friendship depends on it. [00:04:59.00] We need equal cookies for all. [00:05:05.02] Oh no. [00:05:08.08] Purple hippo is still snapping all the cookie pieces [00:05:11.09] into more cookie pieces. [00:05:16.00] Ah! [00:05:18.01] Stop! [00:05:19.06] The pieces are getting smaller. [00:05:22.09] They will be crumbs soon. [00:05:26.03] We will have to eat cookie crumbs. [00:05:28.08] This is a flop, a mess, a disaster. [00:05:34.00] It is a fiasco. [00:05:38.05] But purple hippo keeps on snapping cookie pieces. [00:05:41.08] Snap, snap, snap, snap. [00:05:44.04] No, sorry. [00:05:46.05] I cannot stop. [00:05:49.08] It is what he does. [00:05:53.09] He broke all the pieces again. [00:05:58.05] Why is he still holding the cookies? [00:06:02.02] I am too afraid to count. [00:06:06.01] One, two, three, four, [00:06:09.02] five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12. [00:06:17.07] Now there are 12 cookie pieces, [00:06:21.08] but still only four of us. [00:06:26.05] Get these cookies away from me, please. [00:06:33.01] Oh boy. [00:06:35.09] Guys, take one at a time. [00:06:41.00] I have three pieces. [00:06:43.03] Me too. [00:06:45.06] Me too. [00:06:48.04] One, two, three, me too. [00:06:51.08] We did it, equal cookies for all. [00:06:57.01] Munch, munch, munch, munch, munch. [00:07:00.02] Hey guys, milk time. [00:07:03.03] I have three glasses. [00:07:07.05] Uh oh. [00:07:15.08] And now your hosts, elephant and piggy. [00:07:19.03] That was a fun book. [00:07:21.05] But but now I am hungry for a cookie. [00:07:25.01] Now I am thirsty for milk. [00:07:28.01] This book makes me hungry and thirsty. [00:07:32.09] Good books make me feel big things. [00:07:38.02] (upbeat music) [00:07:40.08] All right, now to our math activity [00:07:43.05] and you know, math is not just numbers. [00:07:46.03] Math is also shapes and math is measuring. [00:07:50.04] We're going to be using a ruler. [00:07:52.03] So we are going to take a greeting card. [00:07:56.07] This is a birthday card, I save all of my greeting cards, [00:08:00.04] handy because then I can use them later on. [00:08:03.07] We're going to turn a greeting card, [00:08:05.08] like a birthday card, this one says, OMG Cake, on it, [00:08:10.03] into a little box, that's like a gift box [00:08:14.09] with a top and the bottom [00:08:17.04] and we're just going to do that [00:08:18.09] by measuring, cutting, and folding. [00:08:21.07] Here's another one. [00:08:22.05] This was also probably a birthday card [00:08:25.04] because look, there's a little cake with candles on the lid. [00:08:28.05] Now the thing is, you want a greeting card [00:08:30.08] that's not a square shape. [00:08:32.03] You want it more of a rectangle shape, [00:08:34.05] a little bit taller than it is wide [00:08:36.07] and also, you don't want a card that's too thick and glossy. [00:08:40.09] It doesn't have a really shiny finish [00:08:43.02] because you're going to be folding it [00:08:44.05] and you want it to be easier to fold. [00:08:47.01] So this has a not very shiny finish to it. [00:08:52.05] Let me start with this OMG Cake one. [00:08:56.03] Now on the crease of the card, [00:08:59.03] I'm just going to be, with my fingernail, [00:09:02.03] really running it along the crease [00:09:04.04] 'cause I want to tear this card into two equal halves [00:09:09.04] really, really easily, all right? [00:09:12.06] So I'm going to go back and forth [00:09:15.00] and I am just pressing my fingernail across the crease. [00:09:20.01] I don't want to cut it with scissors [00:09:22.03] because I might go off a little bit [00:09:24.02] and I want these to be completely even. [00:09:27.02] So now that I've creased it, [00:09:29.01] I'm just going to tear it into two equal pieces. [00:09:32.06] Now I have the bottom of my box and the top of my box. [00:09:38.04] So the next thing you want to do [00:09:40.00] is find the center of this rectangle [00:09:44.01] and the center of this rectangle [00:09:46.02] and you don't have to measure, this is a cool little trick, [00:09:49.04] that you can do, a little math trick. [00:09:51.05] I'm going to take a ruler [00:09:53.02] and I am going to go from this point right there, [00:09:57.08] to this point right there with the ruler [00:10:01.03] and normally I would do this with a pencil, [00:10:04.00] but so that you can see it better. [00:10:05.06] I'm going to do it with a black marking pen [00:10:08.06] and you want to be as exact as you possibly can be. [00:10:13.07] I will draw this and I will show it to you [00:10:17.09] and this is a great way to find the center of a rectangle, [00:10:22.06] or even of a square [00:10:25.06] and then again from one corner to the other corner, [00:10:29.04] and you want the edge of that ruler [00:10:32.00] right up against the points of the card. [00:10:41.06] So there you have the X [00:10:45.00] and you want to do that on both halves of the card. [00:10:48.02] So now I'm going to do the same thing. [00:10:51.02] Corner to corner again, [00:10:53.08] black marking pen is probably too dark [00:10:58.03] for when you do this for real, [00:11:00.00] I'm just doing it in black marker [00:11:02.00] so that you can see it better [00:11:03.09] and where these two corner to corner lines cross [00:11:09.02] is the exact center of this rectangle. [00:11:15.04] We didn't have to measure. [00:11:16.07] We just had to draw straight lines [00:11:18.06] and that is the exact center of this rectangle, [00:11:22.09] this half of the card. [00:11:24.08] Now, because we want the top of our box [00:11:30.02] to be ever so slightly bigger than the bottom of our box [00:11:34.08] and we also want to make sure [00:11:36.01] that the design is on the outside, [00:11:38.05] we want to watch out for a couple of things. [00:11:40.02] We're going to start the folding part. [00:11:43.02] So, I am going to make four folds on this card. [00:11:48.04] This is going to be the bottom of my box [00:11:52.06] and I am going to fold this size, side, excuse me, [00:11:57.08] exactly up to that point in the middle. [00:12:03.00] Exactly to that point in the middle, okay? [00:12:06.08] And I'm going to do exactly the same thing [00:12:09.01] on the other side. [00:12:10.08] I am going to make a fold exactly up to, [00:12:16.00] I want to make sure I fold it nice and straight, [00:12:18.06] exactly up to that center, crisscross point. [00:12:24.05] All right, now I'm going to unfold those, [00:12:27.05] but you can still see the crease lines [00:12:29.03] and I'm going to go to this side and that side, [00:12:32.02] and I'm going to do the same thing. [00:12:33.05] I'm going to fold up exactly to that center point [00:12:40.05] and I want to make sure that I fold evenly. [00:12:43.05] I'm going to go ahead and do it for both sides [00:12:47.03] and then I'll hold it up for you to see. [00:12:53.02] Always making sure that you run your fingers on the crease [00:12:56.06] so the crease is nice and tight [00:13:02.01] and so now you can see your fold lines [00:13:04.09] because I folded it this way and I folded it this way. [00:13:08.01] This is going to be the bottom of the box, [00:13:10.02] so I folded it exactly up to this point. [00:13:13.01] The bottom of the box is going to be a little bit smaller [00:13:16.01] than the top of the box. [00:13:18.01] So now I see where these creases are [00:13:21.02] and I'm going to make four cuts. [00:13:23.09] I'm going to not cut anything off. [00:13:26.05] I'm just going to cut a straight line from the edge, [00:13:29.07] exactly where this crease is, [00:13:32.06] from this edge right up to the black line, [00:13:36.05] then here from this edge, [00:13:39.06] right up to that black line, along the crease [00:13:43.02] and then the same thing on the other side, [00:13:45.09] from the edge, right up to the black line, along the crease [00:13:50.07] and from the edge right up to the black line [00:13:54.00] along the crease. [00:13:55.09] Now I'm going to cut and stop right at the black line. [00:14:03.08] I am cutting along the crease, stopping at the black line [00:14:09.06] and I'm cutting this way, not this way [00:14:13.04] and let me do these two here [00:14:18.04] and then I'll hold it up for you to see. [00:14:20.02] Where's my crease? [00:14:21.03] There's my crease. [00:14:29.06] So now I have two cuts here and two cuts there. [00:14:36.02] Okay, now I'm going to fold [00:14:38.08] and we take these two little flaps [00:14:42.01] and I'm going to go on the inside. [00:14:44.02] You can see it's already starting to look like a box [00:14:46.08] and I'm going to fold those in [00:14:49.08] and then there's a little of the top of this edge here [00:14:54.08] and I'm going to fold that over. [00:14:57.01] The cool thing about these boxes [00:14:58.07] is you don't need tape or glue. [00:15:00.03] They will hold themselves together. [00:15:03.03] So I will go ahead and fold that in, [00:15:06.06] making a nice tight crease [00:15:10.06] and then I will point it towards you again [00:15:14.01] so that you can see very closely what I have done. [00:15:22.07] So again, this extra little flap, I just folded it down [00:15:26.07] and that secures the two little side pieces in place. [00:15:30.00] Now I'm going to do the same thing on this end. [00:15:34.00] Again, these two get folded on the inside [00:15:38.02] and I fold it over the top here. [00:15:42.01] So here is your box bottom, ready to go. [00:15:48.04] Now I want to make the box top [00:15:52.06] and I want to make the box top a little bit bigger, [00:15:55.09] so that means that this area inside this rectangle [00:16:00.06] has to be a little bit bigger [00:16:03.02] than the rectangle for the bottom, [00:16:05.07] so when I make those four folds, I'm not going to fold [00:16:10.08] all the way to the point in the middle, [00:16:13.06] I'm going to fold each side just short [00:16:17.05] of the little point in the middle. [00:16:20.02] So let me do the first one [00:16:30.01] and you can see I didn't fold quite up to that little point [00:16:35.08] right in the center where the two lines cross, [00:16:39.01] I stopped just short of that [00:16:41.03] because I want the area of the top to be bigger. [00:16:45.04] Okay, and I'm going to do the same on the other side. [00:16:49.01] So now you will see a little bit of a gap [00:16:52.04] between the two folds. [00:16:55.03] There wasn't a gap when I folded the sides of the bottom, [00:16:59.01] but now you can see there is a gap in between [00:17:04.00] and once again, those folds, [00:17:06.02] I made sure they were creased really well. [00:17:08.06] I'm gonna do the same thing, [00:17:10.00] fold it from the top and fold it from the bottom [00:17:12.02] and again, I am not going to fold [00:17:14.03] all the way to that point in the center. [00:17:16.01] I'm going to fold it just short of that point in the center [00:17:19.09] and by the way, you want to make sure that the cool picture, [00:17:23.08] like in this case, the cake, [00:17:25.08] and it looks like a chocolate cake too, is on the outside. [00:17:30.01] That's what's going to be your box top. [00:17:32.02] So I'm going to fold just short of that criss cross point, [00:17:39.06] right in the center, [00:17:41.07] creasing it really, really nice and tightly [00:17:44.08] and I fold just short [00:17:54.04] and once again, you can see [00:17:56.01] there's a little gap in the center [00:18:01.06] and now I'm going to do the same thing [00:18:03.01] and make those little cuts [00:18:04.05] and again, I have the rectangular top here, [00:18:08.06] the half of the card, and I'm not going to cut in this side. [00:18:11.08] I'm going to make a cut from the edge of the paper, [00:18:15.01] right up to the black line, [00:18:17.04] the same thing, right along the crease [00:18:19.01] from the edge of right here to that black line [00:18:23.08] and then the same thing there, [00:18:26.00] right along crease and there right along the crease. [00:18:28.01] So again four cuts and double check my creases, good [00:18:34.01] and I stop right at the black line [00:18:39.01] and I'll show you once again, in a sec, [00:18:42.06] after I finished making my four cuts [00:18:47.03] and this box top should be just slightly bigger [00:18:52.00] than the box bottom, so that it'll fit on the top. [00:18:57.05] So here you go, the box top [00:18:59.05] and you have the cut there and there [00:19:01.09] and the cut there and there [00:19:04.08] and then I'm going to do the same folding, [00:19:07.01] where I take these two flaps and I fold on the inside [00:19:12.07] and this extra little piece on top, [00:19:16.01] oh, my fingers are in the way, [00:19:17.05] this little extra piece on top is going to get folded over [00:19:21.00] to hold these two side pieces in place [00:19:23.07] and I'm going to do that at both ends, [00:19:26.04] so make sure that's there. [00:19:27.08] Let me try and do this in mid air. [00:19:29.09] Might be a little bit easier and then nice tight fold, oh. [00:19:38.05] And there and there [00:19:41.08] and then fold this on top [00:19:49.05] and there's your box top. [00:19:53.05] Oh, the cake is upside down. [00:19:55.05] It's a, it's an upside, [00:19:56.07] it would have to be a pineapple cake [00:19:58.03] if it were an upside down cake. [00:20:01.03] So there it is right side up, there's your box top [00:20:05.01] and now we're going to see if it fits on the box bottom. [00:20:10.02] We want it to be a nice snug fit. [00:20:12.06] It does, it fits exactly. [00:20:15.08] There is your little OMG Cake little box. [00:20:20.06] Now, you could bake at teeny tiny cake [00:20:25.05] and put it inside the box and give it as a gift to somebody. [00:20:29.01] Or, you know, you could find a really nice flower. [00:20:31.08] In other words, you've made a gift box. [00:20:34.01] Maybe you should give somebody a gift, [00:20:36.03] maybe a nice piece of silver jewelry or, you know, [00:20:41.09] a little drawing that you made. [00:20:43.07] This box is so handy because you don't need any glue, [00:20:50.01] you don't need any tape. [00:20:51.04] All you did was trace, cut, and fold, and it holds together [00:20:57.05] and it's a really nice decorated box [00:21:00.03] and this way, it's a nice way to use all of those [00:21:04.00] bazillion birthday cards maybe you got, [00:21:06.02] or greeting cards that you got [00:21:08.01] and just make sure you always put the, [00:21:10.06] the drawing, the picture that you want on the outside. [00:21:16.01] You could, even, if you didn't have any leftover cards, [00:21:19.09] you could even use a couple of index cards [00:21:22.08] because those are usually not square, they're rectangular [00:21:25.09] and remember, you want rectangular cards for this [00:21:29.05] and you could then do a drawing on some index cards [00:21:32.07] and just, just remember, [00:21:34.03] make the box bottom a little bit smaller than the box top [00:21:39.04] and it fits perfectly. [00:21:41.07] This is using math to make something [00:21:45.01] really, really handy and cool looking and very practical. [00:21:49.05] (upbeat music) [00:21:51.08] Now it's time for poetry corner [00:21:54.00] and I have two poems about math. [00:21:56.06] I don't know the authors of either of these poems, [00:22:00.02] but that's okay, we can still enjoy them. [00:22:02.03] The first one is called Numbers, Numbers. [00:22:06.09] Numbers, numbers, everywhere I look. [00:22:10.00] Numbers in the grocery store and in my science book, [00:22:13.09] price tags, speed limits, calendars, and walls, [00:22:17.07] in the cafeteria and even in the halls, [00:22:21.04] numbers on my shoes and shirt and on my cereal box, [00:22:25.06] numbers on the TV and on my alarm clock. [00:22:30.04] Numbers, numbers everywhere, at my home and school, [00:22:35.00] numbers everywhere I look, numbers are so cool. [00:22:41.09] And the second poem is called Math About Me. [00:22:47.05] Numbers, numbers, all around, everywhere they can be found. [00:22:54.02] Numbers tell how old I am and how many people in my fam, [00:22:59.07] how much I weigh and just how tall, [00:23:02.05] where I live and that's not all. [00:23:06.02] Numbers are a part of me, money, time, and history. [00:23:11.07] When to wake up and when to eat, [00:23:14.04] what size shoes to buy for my feet, [00:23:17.08] how much money something costs, [00:23:20.03] a number to call if my dog gets lost. [00:23:24.07] I don't know where I would be [00:23:26.07] if numbers weren't a part of me. [00:23:30.05] (upbeat music) [00:23:33.01]
