Explore Zinc's key role in maintaining human health with Dr. Janet King, Executive Director of the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI).  Although zinc was recognized as an essential nutrient for human health about 60 years ago, we still lack an indicator of zinc nutrition. This has prevented the implementation of programs and policies to ensure an adequate zinc intake for populations around the world. Consequently, zinc deficiency is a prevalent nutritional problem worldwide that contributes to nearly a half million deaths per year among infants and children.
