Look up at the night sky and you might be able to track the passage of time or navigate your way home—just as observers from Earth have done throughout history. What do we miss when we pollute our sky with light and crowd it with satellites? What can we learn from the moon and the stars? Tonight, explore the allure of these celestial bodies through story and science.

Moon Musings
With Julia Goodman, Isabel Hawkins, and Aparna Venkatesan

6:30–9:30 p.m. Exhibition
8:00 p.m. Talk
Osher Gallery 1, Kanbar Forum

Explore our millennia-old relationship to the moon through the lenses of art and science as aspects of culture. Roam the Kanbar Forum and discover traditional textile designs representing astronomical symbols, a hand-carved calendar of moon phases, a model of the lunar cycle, an ambient soundscape composed from eclipse data, and ritual drawings of the moon made in sand and snow. At 8:00 p.m., join artist Julia Goodman, astronomer Isabel Hawkins, and cosmologist Aparna Venkatesan for an open conversation about their personal and professional relationships to the moon, and how we connect to Earth’s natural satellite through tides, calendars, origin stories, and our dreams for future exploration.

Julia Goodman is an artist and papermaker based in Berkeley. Her work explores personal and celestial cycles.

Isabel Hawkins is a Senior Scientist at the Exploratorium. She spent 20 years as an astrophysics researcher and science educator at UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory.

Aparna Venkatesan is a cosmologist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at USF. She studies the first stars and quasars in the universe, and is actively involved in cultural astronomy and space policy projects.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase at our Seaglass Restaurant and additional bar locations.
