Join us for the opening night of ¡Plantásticas! and get to know the wonderful world of plants! From science to culture to the oxygen we breathe, plants enrich our lives in countless ways. Touch plants, smell them, magnify them under microscopes, and marvel at the beautiful patterns they make. Tonight, meet some of the collaborators behind the exhibition, enjoy special activities, and dive deeper into the roles plants play in culture, ecosystems, and more. 

Acompáñanos en la noche de inauguración de la exhibición ¡Plantásticas! y conoce el maravilloso mundo de las plantas. Desde la ciencia hasta la cultura y el oxígeno que respiramos, las plantas enriquecen nuestra vida de innumerables maneras. Learn about plant biology with the Dinneny Lab! Check out examples of species that can be cultivated in different climates, and discover new molecular biology tools that Stanford University researchers use to study the mysterious life of plant root systems. Experiment with hands-on exhibits and ask all your plant biology questions!

Dancers Kaeshi Chai and Miriam Peretz don beautiful handmade costumes and present a performance inspired by the form and bloom of flowers. You can catch them dancing alongside Bay Area band Los Bahianatos in Bechtel Gallery 3 at 7:15 and 9:00 p.m., or roaming throughout the museum interacting with audience members and giving pop-up performances from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m.

Los bailarines Kaeshi Chai y Miriam Peretz se ponen hermosos trajes hechos a mano y presentan una actuación inspirada en la forma y la floración de las flores. Armed with screen printing techniques and edible dye, The Great Tortilla Conspiracy will cook up and custom screen-print tortillas using a selection of artworks from their collection. Eat and enjoy these aesthetic sensations. Salsa is optional.

The Great Tortilla Conspiracy is the world’s most dangerous tortilla art collective. Founded in the late 1970s, the collective began as a satirical response to the phenomenon of people seeing sacred images in domestic settings.

Armado con técnicas de serigrafía y tinte comestible, The Great Tortilla Conspiracy (La gran conspiración de la tortilla) cocinará y personalizará tortillas serigrafiadas utilizando una selección de obras de arte de su colección. Come y disfruta de estas sensaciones estéticas. La salsa es opcional.

The Great Tortilla Conspiracy es el colectivo de arte de tortillas más peligroso del mundo. Fundado a finales de la década de 1970, el colectivo comenzó como una respuesta satírica al fenómeno de la gente que ve imágenes sagradas en entornos domésticos.

Learn about the cultural context and the science of corn—and see for yourself how a corn tortilla is made from scratch! Yucatec Maya elder María Ávila Vera and her daughter-in-law Irma Magaña Canul will share traditional cooking methods that have been passed down and refined through generations. They will be joined by Exploratorium Senior Scientist Dr. Isabel Hawkins, who will highlight the nutritional, ecological, and scientific significance of corn.

Aprende sobre el contexto cultural y la ciencia del maíz, ¡y sé testigo de cómo se prepara una tortilla de maíz desde cero! María Ávila Vera, una abuela maya yucateca, y su nuera Irma Magaña Canul compartirán métodos de cocina tradicionales que se han transmitido y refinado a través de generaciones. La Dra. Join us for a conversation between prolific California Indian artist Jean LaMarr and cultural leaders Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino of Cafe Ohlone. Vincent, Louis, and Jean will speak to the importance of keeping Ohlone traditions strong and listening to the wisdom of elders, specifically when considering the abundance, restoration, and healing of plant life in the Bay Area.

Acompáñanos en una conversación entre el prolífico artista indígena de California Jean LaMarr y los líderes culturales Vincent Medina y Louis Trevino de Cafe Ohlone. Discover the inspiration behind one of the ¡Plantásticas! exhibition’s amazing plant patios. Designed by artist Andi Xoch of Latinx with Plants, the patio was influenced by Elizabeth Montufar’s front garden in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Listen in as Andi and Elizabeth discuss how plants can thrive in cityscapes and how they can bring new beauty and community to a neighborhood.

Descubre la inspiración detrás de uno de los increíbles patios de plantas de la exposición ¡Plantásticas! Diseñado por la artista Andi Xoch de Latinx with Plants, el patio se vio influenciado por el jardín delantero de Elizabeth Montufar en el barrio de Boyle Heights de Los Ángeles. Escucha a Andi y a Elizabeth hablar sobre cómo las plantas pueden prosperar en los paisajes urbanos y cómo pueden traer nueva belleza y un sentido de comunidad a un vecindario.
