Excite your atoms at After Dark: Glow. On this dark winter night, we bring you ebullient lights and subtle glows from our eyes’ visible window onto the electromagnetic spectrum.
Arching above the Central Gallery is Cubatron Core**, a tremendous torus of cascading colors by Mark Lottor. Twinkling through the gloom of Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog Bridge is Michael Brown’s playful garden of Playaflies—LED-laden “trees” that respond to movement. Steel Love Design invite your spin on their flashing, cut-metal sculpture The Whirld, and Peter Hudson’s Homouroboros** animates the Plaza with outsized, cinematic monkey business.
Take a shine to illuminating films and exhibits, and show your glow with hands-on activities. Create kaleidoscopic chaos with Ken Salter’s Chaotic Fractal Generator, build a mesmerizing light box, or make a phosphorescent plankton trap—and then observe your catch under an HD microscope. See the fascinating green fluorescent protein (GFP) glowing in bacteria, worms, and fish eggs, and discover fluorescence in everyday objects—including yourself.
Glow intersects with the IlluminArts Walk, a strolling light installation hosted by the Black Rock Arts Foundation and Illuminate the Arts. Participants lit with wearable art will bridge the night sky between two light works: The Language of the Birds in North Beach and Homouroboros on the Exploratorium’s public plaza—while encountering vistas of The Bay Lights along the way. This event has been created in support of San Francisco Travel’s new “Illuminate SF” program. To learn more, visit blackrockarts.org/events/the-illuminarts-walk.
*IlluminArts Walk participants are eligible for our Members rate of $10.
**Both Homouroboros and Cubatron Core will remain on view through the end of December.

Experience life After Dark, an evening series exclusively for adults that mixes cocktails, conversation, and playful, innovative science and art events.
Not a theater, cabaret, or gallery, After Dark contains aspects of all three. Each evening showcases a different topic—from music to sex to electricity— but all include a cash bar and film screenings, plus an opportunity to play with our hundreds of hands-on exhibits. Join us and mingle with inventive scientists, artists, musicians, programmers, and designers. Enjoy live performances, provocative films, interesting music, cutting-edge technology, unexpected extravaganzas, and more, depending on each evening's lineup. Leave the kids at home and meet friends or take a date. Where else can you find an intellectually stimulating playground for adults?
