The Art of Tinkering

Friday, April 18, 2014 • 12:50–2:05 p.m.

Stanford University, Gates Computer Science Building, 353 Serra Mall

Open to the public

Join the Exploratorium’s Mike Petrich and Karen Wilkinson as they discuss the art of tinkering—a process that marries play and inquiry, and that is guided by whim, imagination, and curiosity. As co-directors of the Tinkering Studio, Mike and Karen aim to create an immersive, active, creative place where visitors can slow down, become deeply engaged, and make something that fully represents their ideas and aesthetic.

They’ll share some key insights they’ve had designing tinkering environments in the physical world and how those principles might cross over to the digital realm. They’ll also highlight some of their design principles and how they may impact learning.
