Buoy Days kicks off at adults-only After Dark on Thursday, September 8, at 6:00 p.m. All ages are welcome Friday, September 9–Wednesday, September 14, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Get up close with our data-collection buoy before it returns to the waters between our piers. On loan from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, our buoy spends its time measuring water temperature, carbon dioxide levels, and salinity in San Francisco Bay—and accumulating all kinds of aquatic life. Every year for one week only, we pull it out of the Bay to calibrate and replace the sensors and to clean off corrosion and marine organisms.

Special Events:

Thursday, September 8 • 6:00–10:00 p.m.

Join us for After Dark (ages 18+) and watch our military crane extract the buoy from the water! Learn more about its function and get a first look at the life that has grown on its underside over the past year.

Saturday, September 10 • 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Visit the buoy while it’s dry-docked, learn more about how it works from our educators, and press and preserve your very own piece of seaweed collected from its hull.
