About Cinema Arts: 40th Anniversary
Join us to celebrate 40 years of surprising cinema at the crossroads of art and science. Throughout 2023, the Exploratorium will present a special series of curated screenings, public events, and immersive filmmaking experiences. The series will acknowledge Cinema Arts’ history, pay tribute to some of the accomplished filmmakers who over the decades helped ferment the program’s innovative direction, and showcase and amplify the voices and visions of a new generation of curators and emerging interdisciplinary/media artists.
About the History of Cinema Arts
The Exploratorium’s groundbreaking Cinema Arts program was founded in 1983 by curator and filmmaker Liz Keim under the mentorship of Dr. Frank Oppenheimer. Under four decades of Keim’s direction, the Cinema Arts Program has presented over 5,000 films and cinematic art experiences, both in the museum and as outdoor screenings, filmmaker residencies, installations, and workshops. Cinema Arts features artist-made and independent cinema—documentary shorts, animations, and experimental films—that open portals of discovery. Screenings reflect the Exploratorium’s pedagogy and ever-evolving investigations through the uniquely evocative language of cinema.
