Join us for an evening celebrating you, our supporters. Be among the first to experience Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen, an exhibition on tour for the first time in North America. Strandbeests—"beach animals" in Dutch—are enormous, self-propelling kinetic creations. Constructed largely of PVC tubing, these amazing creatures mesmerize with their eerily lifelike motion.

Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA. Audemars Piguet provided generous support as the tour's National Sponsor. This exhibition is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York. ABC7 is the local media sponsor with additional support from SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle.
GL Associates is the opening events sponsor.
We invite Exploratorium Trust, Chairman's Circle, Catalyst Circle, Innovator, and Oppenheimer Circle donors to join us at 5:00 p.m. for an exclusive early reception with light refreshments. Come early to meet artist Theo Jansen and photographer Lena Herzog and see the beests in action. Your RSVP for early access includes entrance to the Member Appreciation Party.
Enjoy a memorable evening of programs, activities, and talks all inspired by our newest exhibition. Have a copy of Lena Herzog’s Strandbeest photography book signed by Herzog and Jansen. Explore the mathematics behind the beests’ complex ambulatory systems with Exhibit Developer Paul Stepahin. Experiment with making mechanical linkages of your own in our Tinkering Studio. Journey through the chambers of our pitch-black Tactile Dome for free, and watch out for many other special surprises.
