Made in 1974 to promote the museum, Jon Boorstin’s Exploratorium is a work of such cinematic excellence that it was nominated for an Academy Award. With award season just around the corner, we pause to revisit this engaging film, which manages to conjure joy, suspense, and beauty while also conveying the Exploratorium’s complex ideology. Commissioned by the museum’s founder, Frank Oppenheimer, the film eschews documentary and promotional film traditions and features no interviews, voice-overs, or narrative structures. Instead, through alluring imagery, evocative sound design, and carefully selected conversations, Exploratorium provides a phenomenal and immersive sense of place.
