Ship Chat with Research Vessel Falkor Live from the Ocean Floor

Sunday, October 14, 2018 • 3:00 p.m.
Fisher Bay Observatory

Join a live chat with a research ship currently exploring the seafloor with an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) off the coast of Southern California.  R/V Falkor is investigating the complex, changing underwater geography and active geochemistry that supports life in regions where sunlight does not penetrate. Bacteria and other simple life forms in these unique deep ocean ecosystems use chemicals seeping from the sea floor, rather than sunlight, to sustain themselves and support a community of invertebrates and fish.

R/V Falkor is owned and operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute to advance oceanographic research, discovery, and knowledge, and catalyze sharing of information about the oceans. Joining the live chat with Exploratorium host Mary Miller will be Peter Girguis of Harvard University and Lily Simonson, a bay area artist currently doing an at-sea residency on Falkor
