Frances Hellman

Frances Hellman

Frances Hellman is a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, senior faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and President-elect of the American Physical Society. She previously served as Chair of the UC Berkeley Department of Physics (2007–2013) and as Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (2015–2021). Frances is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013), and was a Scientist-in-Residence at the Exploratorium. Her lab investigates the physics of novel magnetic, semiconducting, and superconducting materials particularly in thin film form. 

Frances earned her BA in physics from Dartmouth College in 1978, graduating summa cum laude and phi beta kappa with high honors in physics. She received her PhD in applied physics from Stanford University in 1985.
