Is two degrees warming too much? Is there any remaining “carbon budget”? How do we overcome the Big Money ogre standing in the way of our future? Guest host Gaius Publius discusses climate change with Dr. Michael Mann. Gaius has written extensively on climate issues at AmericaBlog and Naked Capitalism. Gaius’ write up of Dr. Mann’s Scientific American article, discussed in the interview, is here. Mann’s article is here.
An American climatologist and geophysicist, Mann is Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. He introduced innovative statistical techniques to find regional variations in a hemispherical climate reconstruction covering the past 600 years. In 1999 the same team used these techniques to produce a reconstruction over the past 1,000 years (MBH99), dubbed the “hockey stick graph” because of its shape.
