Whoosh. Did you hear that? Of course you didn’t. But what today’s screechingly close encounter between NASA’s New Horizons probe and Pluto lacks in auditory impact, it more than makes up for in visuals.
Nine years after launching, today New Horizons passed within 7,800 miles of Pluto, sailing by this final not-quite-planetary outpost on its merry way out of our solar system. As it zoomed by, the piano-sized probe has done what all good fast-moving tourists do—take pics. Behold! Photos in slideshow will be updated with the latest images available.
