Ames Palms was born and raised in 1970s–1980s Brooklyn, NY, and received a BFA in mixed-media sculpture from Alfred University in 1995. Since then, they have worked to perfect their craft as a neon glass blower. Palms opened San Francisco’s Rebel Neon Studios in 2019. They are passionate about creating the highest quality neon signs and art, and preserving neon for future generations. They are also aware that almost every advantage they have acquired in life can be attributed to white privilege. As an artist, Palms is most interested in how humans use images and language to communicate ideas, which works well in the neon medium.
