Creating community through hands-on science learning.

Helix, a one-year experiment funded by Los Altos Community Investments, was a 5,000-square-foot hybrid science museum, retail space, and community center. Helix engaged with nearby schools and neighborhood groups to develop all-ages programs and events that reflected the unique character and needs of Los Altos and its surrounding communities.

Exhibits were integrated into every available space: hallways, windows, and staircases. Weekly programs focused on a different theme each month, and dynamic Friday-night events created a space for adults 18 and over to learn and explore. Helix also worked with local teachers, schools, and homeschool groups to create inquiry-rich learning experiences for students.

Helix demonstrated how Exploratorium programs, exhibits, and activities can evolve, respond to, and scale for smaller communities—with stunning results for visitor frequency and engagement.
