SAN FRANCISCO (September 11, 2024) – On Saturday, September 28, the Exploratorium will host its annual Latinx+ Engineering Day in partnership with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Now in its 25th year, the all-day event invites visitors of all ages and backgrounds to connect with educators and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Latinx+ Engineering Day is a unique opportunity to celebrate the creativity and impact of Latinx+ engineers and scientists who are shaping our world,” said Dr. Isabel Hawkins, Astronomer and Senior Scientist at the Exploratorium. “Through interactive exhibits, engaging workshops, and thought-provoking presentations, attendees of all ages will have the chance to explore the wonders of engineering and learn about the diverse pathways into STEM careers where Latinx+ youth can bring their entire cultural intelligence to bear in the learning of science and engineering.”

Event highlights include:

  • Interactive Activities: Guests can participate in various hands-on engineering activities – including Disco in a Bag, an LED circuit project – designed to spark curiosity and demonstrate the real-world applications of STEM principles.
  • Inspiring Talks and Panel Discussions: Attendees will hear from a diverse panel of Latinx+ professionals who will share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs in the STEM fields, as well as a keynote discussion with Osher Fellow, Dr. Elizabeth Rasekoala, an expert on multicultural and inclusive science communications.
  • Community Engagement and Networking: The event will bring together community organizations and resources that support Latinx+ representation, including a free book giveaway with San Francisco Public Library (while supplies last).
  • Live Musical Performance by BULULÚ: The celebration will culminate with the vibrant sounds of BULULÚ, a renowned San Francisco-based band that blends traditional Latin music with modern influences.
