Tinkering Social Club: Sewing Circuits with Grace Kim

Tinkering Social Club: Sewing Circuits with Grace Kim

This Thursday, come sit down with wearable technology artist Grace Kim and join us in crafting with conductive thread, LEDs, and sewable battery holders!

Grace's amazing Sessile Handbag is on display in the Tinkering Studio's cabinet of curiosities, and is one of her most ambitious attempts at combining traditional craft techniques (hand knitting, felting, and embroidering) with high-tech elements, such as LEDs, conductive thread, and a LilyPad Arduino. The result is mesmerizing: a barnacled, glowing, soft fashion statement.

But don't worry, you don't need to be highly skilled in either sewing or circuits to join in the fun! We'll take you through the basics and get you started on your very first project, and where you end up will be up to your imagination and ambition.

Grace has a lot of experience teaching how to turn garments into wearable tech art projects, so don't be shy!

After Dark : The Art of Tinkering

We will have some felt swatches to practice sewing on and to create patches, brooches, hair ornaments, and more. But you are definitely encouraged to bring your own piece of clothing that you would like to turn into a wearable art piece. Will will also have a limited number of canvas bags to decorate, available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

TSC is happening Thursday, October 24, 7–9 pm.

Tinkering Social Club is possible through the generous support of Autodesk.

Adult-only evening hours are for 18+ only from 6-10pm on Thursday evenings; admission is $15 ($10 for members). Admission to Tinkering Social Club is at no additional cost.
