When an earthquake hits, ground that looks solid can begin to mix with liquid from the water table below—but you don't have to experience a real earthquake to see liquefaction at work. Just take some soil, add water, and shake. You might be surprised at what pops up and what topples over. Turn this into an engineering challenge for your students!
