Guía para ver eclipses del Exploratorium

Para las personas que estarán en la franja de totalidad durante el eclipse, les brindamos algunas indicaciones para que puedan aprovechar al máximo su experiencia:

1. Imite a Galileo y construya un visor solar.

Ver un eclipse total de Sol es una experiencia imponente, pero también puede ser peligrosa. Salvo durante la fase total del eclipse, cuando la Luna cubre completamente el disco solar, no es seguro observar el eclipse sin protección apropiada para los ojos. No estamos bromeando. No lo haga.

La fase de totalidad durará entre dos y dos minutos y medio, según dónde la persona esté ubicada en la franja de totalidad. La mayor parte de este tiempo no será segura para sus ojos. Por este motivo, en lugar de mirar directamente al Sol cuando está parcialmente cubierto por la Luna, Usted deberá usar un visor solar, como lo hizo Galileo. En este video (en inglés), se muestra cómo construir un visor solar con dos pliegos de cartón blanco, una tuerca tipo T, un trípode, un tubo de PVC y un par de binoculares. Esta es una manera segura de proyectar la imagen del Sol durante un eclipse o en cualquier día de sol radiante.

2. Traiga la espumadera y juegue con las proyecciones.

También puede proyectar imágenes del Sol durante todo el año con algunas técnicas sencillas. Todo lo que necesita es un orificio diminuto, que lo puede perforar en un papel o, simplemente, superponer los dedos de esta forma:

Una espumadera o colador de su cocina también sirven para proyectar imágenes del Sol. Pruebe hacerlo un día soleado para que se vaya dando una idea de cómo hacerlo y del aspecto que suele tener el Sol. Con una referencia de comparación, el eclipse solar será más deslumbrante.

3. Protéjase los ojos.

Bien, entonces querrá mirar al Sol. Lo entendemos. Pero en ese caso, tiene que hacerlo de manera segura. Cómprese un par de anteojos para ver el Sol. Están fabricados para bloquear la luz solar durante un eclipse parcial (o en cualquier momento) y evitarán que los rayos nocivos le ocasionen daño a la retina. También puede ir a un taller de soldadura y comprar un par de anteojos para soldar n.° 14. Es la tonalidad más oscura de los anteojos para soldar y le protegerán los ojos mientras mira al Sol.

4. Conozca la jerga solar.

¿Recuerda lo que dice Beyoncé?: “Si te gustó, deberías haberle colocado un anillo”. El Sol está escuchando definitivamente a la reina Beyoncé: cada eclipse solar total tiene dos anillos de diamante.

También podrá maravillarse de la corona solar, preste atención a las perlas de Bailey y ni que hablar de las protuberancias solares. Investigue el significado de estos términos para que pueda reconocerlos cuando ocurran.

5. Construya una demostración.

¿Por qué no todos podrán ver la fase de totalidad? La franja de totalidad solo tendrá un ancho de 70 millas. Dicha franja depende de la umbra, que es la sombra con la que la Luna cubre a la Tierra. Donde pasa la umbra, ahí está la franja de totalidad. Con la ayuda de un amigo y usando materiales cotidianos, Usted puede crear su propia demostración.
