San Francisco’s Chinatown, the oldest in North America, is an iconic and influential part of the cultural fabric of San Francisco. Beyond its contemporary popularity as a tourist attraction, the neighborhood exists as a dynamic community of families and individuals cultivating tradition and nurturing social progress. In this program, join filmmaker James Q. Chan as he shares his current documentary project, Chinatown Stories: You Are Here, and premieres a new episode.

Chinatown Stories: You Are Here centers vibrant and specific stories from within the community—bridging us to one another, one short film at a time. Each film is a specific entry point into a Chinatown neighborhood and the inspiring contributions community members made in shaping their community and beyond. Chan will be joined by Dorothy Quock, researcher and beloved Chinatown community elder, for a live conversation about the series.
James Q. Chan is an Emmy-nominated director and producer based in San Francisco. Recent credits include producing Chinatown Rising, directing large-format 360° films for Disney, and launching the new doc series Chinatown Shorts. His directorial debut Forever, Chinatown (PBS/World/Emmy® Nominee) received multiple festival jury and audience awards and screened globally with American Film Showcase, the US State Department/USC film diplomacy program, where James serves as an envoy. James received a Certificate of Honor from the SF Board of Supervisors for his work highlighting stories from the APA community. James is a member of New Day Films, the filmmaker-run distribution cooperative, and a member of the Directors Guild of America.
With a travel/tourism degree and an International Tour Management Institute certification, Dorothy Quock has led 19 groups to the People’s Republic of China in addition to living there for months at a time. Between 1982 and 1990, she assisted colleagues on trips to the Cook Islands, East Africa, and South America; since 1991, she has worked as a Tour Manager for SF Wok Wiz Chinatown Tours. In 2020, Chinatown Pretty featured Dorothy’s passion for fashion and social justice. With her interpersonal communication skills and cross-cultural sensitivity, Dorothy brings knowledge and experience to her collaboration with Good Medicine Picture Company.
