Are you willing to risk it? Everyone has a threshold when it comes to the chances they’re willing to take. From confronting superstitions to facing fears, calculating the difference between actual and perceived danger is a complex decision-making challenge we all undertake. Tonight, explore the science of risk with experiments and demonstrations designed to make your heart beat faster. Whether you’re reckless or reserved, we wager you’ll have a thrilling time at After Dark.

Dangerous Demos
With Zeke Kossover

8:00 p.m.
Osher Gallery 1, Kanbar Forum

Don’t flinch! Exploratorium educator Zeke Kossover performs a trio of demonstrations with real science and real danger. Will you volunteer to put your face in the path of a gigantic, spiked mace? Nap on a bed of nails? Stand in a shower of sparks reaching 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit? With fearlessness and faith in physics, Zeke will ringlead this spectacle of science. Do not try this at home!

Scales, Slithers, and Stings
With Classroom Safari

6:30–9:30 p.m.
Osher Gallery 1

Get an up-close (but not too close!) look at spiders, lizards, snakes, snapping turtles, and more. Let animal educator Bonnie Cromwell introduce you to a range of reptiles and arachnids. Learn about these creatures in a safe environment—and dispel those irrational fears!

Bonnie Cromwell is the owner of Classroom Safari, an educational outreach program whose animal ambassadors help you understand their natural world.

Risky Exhibits
6:30–9:30 p.m.
Osher Gallery 1

Will you suffer a shock? Bet big? Spill out of your seat? This collection of classic Exploratorium exhibits creates the perception of risk without actually putting you in danger. But you won’t really know until you try!

Do You Dare?
6:00–9:30 p.m.

Social risks can feel just as daunting as physical risks. Draw a card from our deck of dares when you enter the museum. Complete the dare, trade with a friend, or decide not to take the risk at all—it’s up to you!

DJ Teeko
From Hip Hop for Change

6:30–7:45 and 8:15–9:30 p.m.
Bechtel Gallery 3

Get ready to dance your way through the night as DJ Teeko from Hip Hop for Change sets the vibe and keeps the party moving!

Hip Hop for Change is an Oakland-based nonprofit that uses grassroots activism to educate people about socioeconomic injustices and advocate solutions through hip-hop culture.
