Bay Area Science Festival Kicks Off at the Exploratorium

Thursday, October 24, 2013 • 6:00–10:00 p.m.

Exploratorium, Pier 15

Included with museum admission.

Adults Only (18+)

We’re kicking off the Bay Area Science Festival with a celebration of fascinating science from around the Bay Area. On October 24, the festival's opening night, enjoy special guest lectures by Andrew Oliphant (San Francisco State Department of Geography), William Cochlan, PhD (Romberg Tiberon Center), and Ben Davis (Bay Lights and Pi in The Sky). Get creative all evening long with the Tinkering Social Club's hands-on activities, or participate in The Really Big Questions, an engaging group conversation about what makes for good storytelling.

Explorables will test your design mettle in a competition to see who can safely land an egg launched from on high, and Explainers will demonstrate Plankton Drags of the bay and Cow Eye Dissections, along with a special dissection done by staff specialist Stephanie Bailey. Skip Elsheimer and senior scientist Ron Hipschman will provide unique Exploratorium-style commentary alongside a handpicked selection of vintage science reels.

Join us for the Tinkering Social Club, an experiment in learning through community tinkering. Meet other curious, adventurous, expert and novice tinkerers and mess around with tools, materials, and technologies. Share what you know and don’t know. Talk about your tinkering passions, discover new ones, and meet some delightfully quirky people.

The opening night of the BASF is going to be full of investigations, discoveries, and aha moments—don't miss a single one.
