Gibson + Recoder: Powers of Resolution is a solo exhibition by New York–based artists Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder. Collaborators since 2000, Gibson and Recoder disclose the paradigm of expanded cinema through sculptural works, installations, and temporal performances. Drawing on two of the Exploratorium’s vital paths of exploration—vision and perception— Powers of Resolution includes two site-specific works. With one work incorporating natural light and the other artificial light, these pieces act as companions that, in their distinct approaches, emphasize the phenomenal magic of light, which so often passes unobserved.
Obscurus Projectum reimagines the multipurpose theatrical setting of the Exploratorium’s Kanbar Forum as a large-scale camera obscura. Using no lenses or mirrors, Obscurus Projectum is revealed through a single beam of light piercing through an entirely darkened space. Iluminatoria is staged in our Black Box and uses “lo-tech” analog mechanisms and artificial light to craft a kinetic light sculpture.
Lightplay—a series of artists engagements focused on light interventions—begins with Gibson + Recoder: Powers of Resolution, which celebrates the elusive and delicate beauty revealed through immersive experiences with light.
